2008-06-29 San Francisco, California, USA

Here are photos from San Francisco. We watched one of the most colorful annual parades in San Francisco, the Pride Parade, in the morning. We took a cable car to Fishermans Wharf where we had lunch (clam chowder, shrimps and calamari). Also visited Pier 39, Lombard Street and the Golden Gate Bridge.

2008-06-22 Illinois, USA

We'll be leaving DeKalb in a few days. I can't imagine this has been my home away from home for the past four weeks! Anyway, here are some random pictures. Did you know that barbed wire was invented in DeKalb?

Some of the highlights were a barbecue picnic where we grilled some steak, night out and karaoke in Starbusters, and a picnic hosted by the Filipino community in DeKalb and Sycamore.

We visited the Mexican neighborhood of Pilsen as well as the Puerto Rican community. The street murals all over the place were great! I has some local snacks in the Puerto Rican area. In the evening, we watched The Buddy Holly Story at the Drury Lane Theater. Dinner was served after the performance.

2008-06-19 Chicago, Illinois, USA

We visited the Mooseheart Child City & School (http://www.mooseheart.org) in the morning. In the afternoon, we visited the Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago's (in)famous Southside. I didn't dare go around since we were warned not walk around the area on our own.

The highlight for the day was the Architecture Cruise where we got to absorb Chicago's wonderful architecture. Chicago is said to be the birthplace of Modern American architecture in the early 20th century.

In the evening, we watched a concert featuring the Filipino kundiman. Ironically, the violinist, Stephen Shey, is Chinese-American, while the pianist is Japanese. Shey is an emerging musician and Filipinos should be honored that he has chosen and included our immortal kundiman in his repertoire, thus putting our own classical Filipino music on the international stage.

2008-06-15 Illinois, USA

We went around Abraham Lincoln's hometown today: Springfield, Illinois. In the morning, I passed by his tomb deep inside the Oak Ridge Cemetery. We then visited the grand Illinois State Capitol before proceeding to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. The exhibits and shows were wonderful!

I walked five blocks to the Lincoln Home. In fact, they preserved the neighborhood around it. Even the street surface was replicated. From there, I visited the building where his law office was located which is in front of the Old State Capitol.
